Making a New Land : Enviromental Histories of New Zealand

Description

"Making a New Land" presents an interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most rapid and extensive transformations in human history: that which followed Maori and then European colonization of New Zealand's temperate islands. This is a new edition of "Environmental Histories of New Zealand," first published in 2002, brimming with new content and fresh insights into the causes and nature of this transformation, and the new landscapes and places that it produced. Unusually among environmental histories, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of change, focusing on international as well as local contexts. Its 19 chapters are organized in five broadly chronological parts: Encounters, Colonising, Wild Places, Modernising, and Contemporary Perspectives. These are framed by an editorial introduction and a reflective epilogue. The book is well illustrated with photographs, maps, cartoons and other graphics.

Abacus Mind Math Level 1 - Workbook 2 (for students): Quinn's done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Shunned by everyone she knows, Quinn loses her friends, her reputation, and her identity. Because Carey's not just any guy--he's a Marine who's serving overseas, and beloved by everyone in their small, military town. "If Alfred Hitchcock had directed"Downton Abbey," the result would have been this book. Alexandra Monir takes Making a New Land : Enviromental Histories of New Zealand free ebook us on a gripping, nonstop thrill ride with just the right amount of supernatural and an ending that you definitely won't suspect. I devoured it in one sitting." Eva tries to be a good friend and help her out, but how long can a twelve-year-old manage by herself? It's not just Kate who needs Eva's help, though helping Ruby turns out to be a LOT more fun! Ruby needs Eva to keep her company on a trip to London where she's trying out for a scholarship. Is there any way the trip away with Ruby can help everyone sort things out? It seems impossible, but if you have a problem that needs solving, just leave it to Eva! Eva's third book from bestselling author Judi Curtin.

James H. Austin: Selfless Insight : Zen and the Meditative Transformations of Consciousness

Selfless Insight : Zen and the Meditative Transformations of Consciousness

Description

Attention, self-consciousness, insight, wisdom, emotional maturity: how Zen teachings can illuminate the way our brains function and vice-versa.When neurology researcher James Austin began Zen training, he found that his medical education was inadequate. During the past three decades, he has been at the cutting edge of both Zen and neuroscience, constantly discovering new examples of how these two large fields each illuminate the other. Now, in Selfless Insight, Austin arrives at a fresh synthesis, one that invokes the latest brain research to explain the basis for meditative states and clarifies what Zen awakening implies for our understanding of consciousness. Austin, author of the widely read Zen and the Brain, reminds us why Zen meditation is not only mindfully attentive but evolves to become increasingly selfless and intuitive. Meditators are gradually learning how to replace over-emotionality with calm, clear objective comprehension. In this new book, Austin discusses how meditation trains our attention, reprogramming it toward subtle forms of awareness that are more openly mindful. He explains how our maladaptive notions of self are rooted in interactive brain functions. And he describes how, after the extraordinary, deep states of kensho-satori strike off the roots of the self, a flash of transforming insight-wisdom leads toward ways of living more harmoniously and selflessly. Selfless Insight is the capstone to Austin's journey both as a creative neuroscientist and as a Zen practitioner. His quest has spanned an era of unprecedented progress in brain research and has helped define the exciting new field of contemplative neuroscience.

Hilary Chisepo: Fuel Cell Emualtor

Fuel Cell Emualtor

Description

Worldwide, the need for power generation structures continues to increase and hydrogen presents an alternative source to non-renewable fuels. The fuel cell has the potential to influence an energy revolution as it offers the prospect of supplying the world with clean and sustainable electrical power. However since fuel cells have not been fully commercialized for a number of reasons, it has become difficult to further develop this technology without access to real fuel cells. Emulators have therefore become of considerable value. Emulators are useful in areas where fuel cells are not available for experimentation and interrogation. Such systems mimic as closely as possible how a real fuel cell would behave so that by the time a real fuel cell is acquired, there would be minimum damage sustained as the fuel cell system would be calibrated properly. The emulator discussed in this book is based on electrical lumped parameters and its chief purpose was to exhibit the static response and the dynamic behavior of a real PEM fuel cell. Multiple experiments were done with a pseudo fuel cell system powering a resistive load and results were recorded and analysed.

Lewis Blackwell: The Life and Love of Trees

The Life and Love of Trees

Description

Trees are vital without them we simply wouldn't be here. Not only essential, they have been an inspiration throughout our history. In breathtaking photographs and stories we are taken on a journey from the boreal forest at the edge of the Arctic to the rainforests girdling the planet; from ancient bristlecones to fresh-leaved seedlings; from the charming and familiar to the scary and rare. An elegantly written and highly accessible text is complemented by an extraordinary collection of images created by some of the world's leading nature photographers.

During twelve years of continuous campaigns, Alexander conquered an empire that stretched from the shores of the Adriatic to the edge of modern India. Arrian's history of those conquests, the most reliable and detailed account to emerge from the ancient world, is a work that will fascinate readers interested in classical studies, the history of warfare, and the origins of East-West tensions that still simmer today in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. Drawing on Ptolemy's memoirs and other sources that have not survived antiquity, Arrian's portrait of Alexander is unmatched for its accuracy and immediacy. Having served as a high Roman official with command of an army, Arrian had a unique perspective on Alexander, imbued with a level of understanding that only firsthand military experience can provide. In the richly illustrated and annotated style of the Landmark series, The Campaigns of Alexander, which features an engaging and eloquent new translation by Bye Mam, I Love You: A Daughter's Last Words. A Mother's Search for Justice. The Shocking True Story of the Murder of Rebecca Aylward. download epub Pamela Mensch, brings together some of the pre-eminent classics scholars at work today to create what is certain to be the definitive edition of this essential work of history.

Bye Mam, I Love You: A Daughter's Last Words. A Mother's Search for Justice. The Shocking True Story of the Murder of Rebecca Aylward.

Description

On Saturday, 23 October 2010, Sonia Oatley waved off her 15-year-old daughter, Becca, to meet Joshua Davies, a former boyfriend. Becca's hope was that the two of them would get back together, but it was not to be. By 3pm, oddly, she stopped answering her mobile. By 7.30 she was officially declared missing. And at 10am the following morning, while Sonia and the family were out searching, came the call that is every parent's worst nightmare. The police had found the body of a young girl in local woodland: she'd been bludgeoned to death with a rock. Bye, Mam, I Love You is the story of Rebecca Aylward's murder - a slaying that was described by an incredulous media as having been committed for 'the price of a breakfast'. But, as soon became clear, this was no crime of passion. Becca's death had apparently been many months in the planning, by a calculating, cold-blooded killer. From the immediate arrest of 16-year-old Joshua Davies, to the lengthy investigation and harrowing five week trial that convicted him, this book is both an expression of a mother's love and her pride in a daughter who had so much to live for, as well as an insight into the mind of a brutal murderer.

Thomas Hylland Eriksen: Ethnicity and Nationalism: Anthropological Perspectives

Ethnicity and Nationalism: Anthropological Perspectives

Description

Ethnicity and nationalism are pervasive features of the contemporary world, but how far is ethnicity a result of cultural differences, and how much is it in fact dependent on the practical use of, and belief in, such differences? In this book, Thomas Hylland Eriksen demonstrates that far from being an immutable property of groups, ethnicity is a dynamic and shifting aspect of social relationships. Drawing on a wide range of classic and recent studies in anthropology and sociology, Eriksen examines the relationship between ethnicity, class, gender and nationhood and more in a lucid and comprehensive manner. A core text for all students of social anthropology and related subjects, Ethnicity and Nationalism has been a leading introduction to the field since its original publication in 1993. This new edition - expanded and thoroughly revised - is indispensable to anyone seriously interested in understanding ethnic phenomena. New topics covered include cultural property rights, the role of genetics in the public understanding of identification, commercialisation of identity, and the significance of the internet.
